Baldi Hot Springs

We had so much fun at the Baldi Hot Springs resort today. Thanks for recommendation, Jamie! This resort has 25 pools and several waterslides with heated water from the Arenal Volcano. The pools are hottest at the top of the resort and decrease in temperature as you go down. We were able to get a day pass which gave us access to all the different types of pools.

We arrived about 11 am and basically had the place to ourselves. The morning included a visit to the kids area (with a funnel waterslide that would hard to find in the US), testing out the sauna, as well as both hot and cold pools and a spirited game of Marco Polo in one of the deserted swim up bars. That was Zoe’s favorite pool.

I like things pretty hot, but Danny and the girls preferred the colder pools. Since it is the off-season, the highest pool was under construction, but the next pool down was too hot for even your toes! It was funny to watch people’s reactions when they would go up to the highest pool and try to walk in. It could boil you alive! A lot of the reviews we read said that the waterslides were pretty fast and rough, so Danny was the only one that tried the funnel slide. His shoulder was pretty sore afterwards.

We left the resort for lunch at one of the sodas in Zeta Trace. Darcy was so happy to have empanadas again. All the Costa Rica food has been a hit so far and I’m really proud that the girls have been open to trying things. Traveling with picky eaters would be difficult.

After lunch we returned to the resort and spent a lot of time in the “cool” pool that had lots of waterfalls, grottos and also had some cold pools built in. Darcy really loved going between a cold and hot pool, El Scaldo and El Frio. Things were a bit more crowded in the afternoon, when many of the tour companies made their afternoon stop at the resort. I think we were all pretty tired by the time we arrived back at the house.

One funny thing that happened this morning involved salt. When we were shopping at the grocery store earlier in the week, we tried to buy some salt and pepper for cooking at home. We found pepper, but were completely out of luck on the salt. At the house, there was a red tupperware container of sugar, but no salt. When Danny made some tea for Zoe this morning, he put a healthy teaspoon of sugar in her tea. “Dad, there’s something wrong with my tea, it tastes terrible”. Turns out we did have salt here after all.
